Paul McCathie lead instructor

Paul McCathie – lead tree climbing instructor

Paul grew up surfing and climbing trees in the small town of Raglan on the North Island of New Zealand. Before deciding he’d rather spend his working life guiding people into the canopy of trees, Paul trained as an arborist at Wintec in New Zealand. He graduated as Student of the Year in 2001 and went on to work in commercial arboriculture in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

Goodleaf Tree Climbing branched out from Paul’s own love of climbing trees for pleasure.  Finding no recreational tree climbing courses in the UK, in 2005 Paul trained with Genevieve Summers at Dances with Trees (part of Tree Climbers International).

Since 2005 Paul has regularly returned to the USA to update his training and to attend the annual ‘Tree Climbers Rendezvous’. He sits on the council of the GOTC and is recognised internationally as a Senior Tree Climbing Instructor with the GOTC. He has climbed trees in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the USA.

In 2012 Paul joined forces with Lantra Awards and wrote the world’s only independently certified training courses for recreational tree climbing. Paul is a freelance Lantra Awards tree climbing instructor and assessor.

All our staff are trained by Paul and work under his supervision.
