Trainee Lead Instructor – Tree Climbing

Goodleaf is a well-established outdoor adventure company based in Ryde, Isle of Wight. We specialise in the delivery of quality recreational tree climbing experiences to a wide variety of clients. Goodleaf is recognised as a leader in recreational tree climbing; we offer the only independently awarded tree climbing courses in the world and are embarking on a period of expansion.
Our core business is a two hour tree climbing session which is run in the stunning setting of Appley Park, Ryde. We are looking for a friendly, active and well-presented person with brilliant customer service skills to train as a Lead Instructor for the two hour session.
This is a new position within the company and you will be working closely with Paul our Lead Instructor and Director.
Initially you will be working alongside Paul and other members of staff.
Your responsibilities will include:
- helping to set up and pack down climbs
- welcoming customers with a warm smile
- helping customers climb safely and with maximum enjoyment
- making cups of tea
- sending climbers away with a fond farewell
- some basic administration tasks
As you progress through training, you will learn to run tree climbing sessions with the help of Paul. As well as the above responsibilities you will then progress to learning to climb trees independently and taking responsibility for the whole session. You will set up, manage and pack down climbs independently.
You must be able to demonstrate the following skills:
Top notch customer service skills
Experience in a teaching or leadership role with the ability to motivate and inspire others
An understanding of the values and ethos of outdoor learning
You must be physically fit, energetic and have a head for heights – this is a physically demanding role
Experienced with working with customers from a wide range of backgrounds
Friendly, cheerful, well organised and enjoy working outdoors all day
Willing to learn new technical skills
Have knowledge of the natural world and the Isle of Wight
Comfortable with non- traditional working hours including bank holidays and weekends
…able to make a good cup of tea
This is a seasonal position from late March to end October.
We have some flexibility regarding hours, but you must be available throughout May Half Term, July and August and October half term.
The position is based in Ryde, Isle of Wight, there is no accommodation available with the position.

We offer a comprehensive 12 day technical skills training package that includes CS38 – Climb Trees and Perform Aerial Rescue and our own Lantra Awards Course ‘Tree Climbing Facilitator’. CS38 can also be assessed independently for someone who would like a professional arboriculture qualification.
Starting salary within the range of £15,600 – £16,640 per annum pro rata leading to salary range of £20,800 – £24,960 per annum pro rata (dependent on skills and previous experience) based on 40 hr working week.
Although the position is seasonal, ideally we would like to appoint someone who can work for us in following years and we are offering a bonus at the end of every following year to someone who returns.
